Italy is known for truly spectacular terroirs that are home to some of the best wines. Up in the Northeast Veneto region, wines like Prosecco, Valpolicella and Soave are produced. “The Veneto is its own vinous nation,” says Monica Larner, in the first of her two-part series on the region’s wines. “It has the volume and the quality to stand on its own outside the context of Italian wine.” 

One wine that shines particularly bright in the Veneto is the mighty Amarone, where “it is king,” Larner states, made from only the best varietals in the region. 

“Valpolicella reds are based on a blend of grapes including Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara, Oseleta and others,” Larner continues. “Often these varieties are planted within the same vineyard. The system relies on meticulous fruit selection.”
